The BitBox02 Bitcoin-Only is a $150 Swiss hardware wallet with open-source firmware, a secure chip, and microSD backups. It is one of the easiest hardware wallets to set up, but it connects by USB-C, so it cannot sign air-gapped. I rate it 9.3/10. The newer BitBox02 Nova adds Bluetooth for iPhone. If you want air-gapped QR signing, buy a Jade instead.
The Swiss don't mess around. Shift Crypto built the BitBox02 with the same mentality that makes Swiss watches and bank vaults. The Bitcoin-Only edition strips out all altcoin code, leaving a clean, auditable firmware. It has no camera and no QR mode, so it signs over USB-C. If you want a plug-and-play device that does one thing well, this is a strong contender.

The BitBox02 Bitcoin-Only lists at $150 on the BitBox shop, which ships worldwide from Switzerland. Shift Crypto still sells the original BitBox02 alongside the BitBox02 Nova, which launched in 2025 and costs more. Both come in a Bitcoin-only edition.
BitBox02 vs BitBox02 Nova
The Nova keeps the same open-source firmware and adds an EAL6+ certified secure chip, a scratch-resistant glass display, and Bluetooth so it works with iPhones and iPads. The original BitBox02 is USB-C only, which means it works with Android phones and computers but not with an iPhone.
Neither model has a camera or QR mode. Every transaction is signed over a USB or Bluetooth connection. If an air gap matters to you, that is the reason to pick a Jade or Jade Plus instead.
Why the Bitcoin-only edition
Shift Crypto builds two separate firmwares. The Bitcoin-only edition has no altcoin code in it at all, so there is less code that could contain a bug. It is the version I review and the only version I recommend.
Setup and backups
You plug the BitBox02 into a computer or Android phone and set it up in the BitBoxApp. The device writes an encrypted backup to the included microSD card, and you can also display the 24 seed words to copy onto a metal backup. I recommend doing both, and keeping the microSD card and the seed words in different places.
The BitBox02 also works with Sparrow, Electrum, and Specter, and it supports multisig, which makes it a good second or third signing device next to a Jade.

My Final Take
The BitBox02 Bitcoin-Only is underrated. It lacks the air-gap capability of Jade Plus or Foundation Passport, which matters for serious stacks. But the build quality is excellent, the app is clean, and the open-source firmware is well-audited. At $150, it's priced right. If you don't need air-gapped signing and want something that just works, this is a solid choice. The lack of QR codes is its main limitation.
