Blockstream Jade Plus Review
Air-gapped, open-source, Bitcoin-only security

The Jade Plus is what happens when cypherpunks build hardware. Adam Back's team at Blockstream created a wallet that solves the secure element problem differently than anyone else. Instead of trusting a black-box chip, they built a system where your seed literally cannot be extracted. I've tested dozens of wallets. This one sits on my desk.
Blockstream has been Bitcoin-only since before it was cool. While other companies chased altcoin money, they doubled down on Layer 2 solutions like Liquid and Lightning. The Jade Plus reflects that focus. No code exists for coins that don't matter. Every line serves Bitcoin.
Security Architecture
Virtual Secure Element with blind oracle PIN verification. Your seed is never stored in extractable form. Uses a unique architecture where the PIN, device data, and Blockstream oracle combine to reconstruct the key only during signing.
| Secure Element | Virtual Secure Element (no hardware SE, but cryptographically equivalent security without the black-box trust issues) |
| Connection Methods | QR codes (fully air-gapped), Bluetooth, USB-C |
| Display | 1.9" IPS LCD (largest in class) |
| Passphrase Support | Yes |
| Multisig Support | Yes |
About Blockstream
Trust Assessment
Reasons to Trust
- Blockstream is led by Adam Back, inventor of Hashcash (cited in Bitcoin whitepaper)
- Major Bitcoin Core contributors on staff
- Long track record of Bitcoin-only focus since 2014
- Fully open-source with no hidden code
- No history of security breaches or data leaks
- No controversial "recovery" services that could extract seeds
Concerns
- Not my concern, but many people are confused by blind oracle. Yes, Jade Plus uses Blockstream's server by default, but you can self-host your own if you want. It's actually maximum flexibility while still maintaining privacy and trustlessness.
What's Good
- True Air-Gapped Operation: Unlike wallets that claim air-gap but require USB for setup, Jade Plus can operate entirely via QR codes from day one. Your private keys never touch a networked device.
- Virtual Secure Element Architecture: Traditional secure elements are black boxes you cannot audit. Jade's virtual secure element provides equivalent security through cryptographic means, all verifiable in open-source code.
- No Seed Extraction Possible: The architecture physically prevents seed extraction. There is no "Jade Recover" because the design makes it impossible. Your keys cannot be exfiltrated even with physical access.
- Largest Display in Class: The 1.9" screen lets you verify full addresses without scrolling. This matters because address substitution attacks rely on users only checking first/last characters.
- Bitcoin-Only Focus: No altcoin code means smaller attack surface, faster updates, and development resources focused entirely on Bitcoin security.
What Could Be Better
- Blind Oracle Dependency: Default setup uses Blockstream's PIN server. While you can self-host, most users won't. If Blockstream disappeared, you'd need your seed backup (which you should have anyway).
- Newer Product: Jade Plus launched more recently than Coldcard or Trezor. Some prefer battle-tested devices with longer track records.
Best For
- Security-focused Bitcoiners who want verifiable, auditable security
- Users who value air-gapped operation without compromise
- Those concerned about closed-source secure elements
- Bitcoin maximalists who don't need altcoin support

The Verdict
The Jade Plus is my top recommendation for most Bitcoiners. It hits the sweet spot between uncompromising security and actual usability. The air-gapped QR workflow is smooth, the screen is readable, and the open-source architecture means you're not trusting anyone's pinky promise. At $149, it undercuts the Passport and matches the Coldcard Q on features while being more approachable. Buy it.
