Bitkey

Jack Dorsey's Block built Bitkey for the masses. It's Bitcoin-only, which earns points. But the 2-of-3 multisig setup means Block holds one of your keys. You can't spend without their app. For hardcore Bitcoiners, that's a compromise. For someone whose alternative is keeping coins on Coinbase, this is a major upgrade.

Block committed to Bitcoin when Jack Dorsey went all-in. Bitkey is Bitcoin-only by design, not as an afterthought. The entire product exists to onboard normies to self-custody. That mission aligns with Bitcoin values even if the execution involves trust tradeoffs.

Where It Falls Short

  3. Requires Mobile App: Cannot use the hardware device without Block's mobile app.
  4. Limited Display: No screen to verify addresses on device. Must trust phone display.

The Verdict

Bitkey is training wheels for self-custody. The 2-of-3 multisig makes recovery idiot-proof, but it also means Block is involved in your transactions. If you understand and accept that tradeoff, it's a fine product for beginners or gifting to nocoiners. If you want true sovereignty, get a Jade Plus or Coldcard instead. Bitkey exists for people who would otherwise leave coins on exchanges.
