Trezor Safe 5 Review

Trezor Safe 5

The Trezor Safe 5 is SatoshiLabs' premium offering. Color touchscreen, haptic feedback, secure element. It looks and feels premium. But at $129, you're not far off the price of a Jade Plus while still running multi-coin firmware. The open-source heritage is real. The altcoin support remains a problem.

Multi-Coin Warning

Supporting multiple cryptocurrencies means more code, more complexity, and more potential vulnerabilities. Most altcoins are scams anyway. The wallet makers who support them are prioritizing sales over your security.

Trust Assessment

Reasons to Trust

  • Color touchscreen
  • Haptic feedback
  • Open-source firmware
  • Secure element
  • Established brand

Concerns

  • Supports altcoins (not Bitcoin-only)
  • Expensive at $129
  • No air-gap option
  • Past physical vulnerabilities in older models

The Strengths

  1. Premium Display: The 1.54" color touchscreen is a significant upgrade from Safe 3.
  2. Haptic Feedback: Physical feedback when pressing buttons improves user experience.
  3. Open-Source: Firmware remains open-source, continuing Trezor tradition.

What Could Be Better

  1. Multi-Coin Bloat: Supports thousands of altcoins. Unnecessary attack surface for Bitcoiners.
  2. No Air-Gap: Requires USB connection. No offline signing option.
  3. Expensive: At $129, it's pricey for a non-air-gapped, multi-coin device.

Best For

  • Trezor fans who want premium experience
  • Multi-coin holders who value open-source
  • Those who prioritize touchscreen over air-gap

My Final Take

The Trezor Safe 5 has decent hardware. That part isn't the problem.

It has touchscreen and haptic. Some people will like that.

Not Recommended

Multi-coin wallets aren't what I recommend for bitcoin storage. More code means more risk. At $129, you can get a Bitcoin-only device with a smaller, more auditable firmware.

Bitcoin-only, dummy.

I'm not going to help you buy a multi-coin wallet. Check out my Bitcoin-only recommendations instead.
