Blockstream Jade runs Bitcoin-only firmware. Ledger Nano S Plus decided to support altcoins too. One of these approaches is correct. But I'll lay out the full picture so you can see for yourself.

I've spent time with both devices. I've set them up, signed transactions, tested the firmware. What follows is what I found.

Ledger Nano S Plus: Security Incidents You Should Know

May 2023: Ledger Recover Capability

Same firmware architecture allows seed extraction like Nano X.

These aren't hypothetical risks. They happened. When a company has multiple critical security incidents, you have to ask: why would you trust them with your bitcoin?

The Bottom Line

Blockstream Jade wins by virtue of being Bitcoin-only. Why would you trust your sats to a device cluttered with altcoin code?

Under the Hood: Security

The security model is where you should start any comparison. Everything else is just features.

  • Blockstream Jade: Virtual Secure Element with blind oracle PIN verification. Same security model as Jade Plus.
  • Ledger Nano S Plus: Closed-source secure element. Same trust issues as Nano X.

One wallet lets you see every line of code. The other asks you to trust their word. Blockstream Jade is fully open-source. Ledger Nano S Plus isn't. For Bitcoin security, transparency should be the default, not the exception.

Blockstream Jade supports air-gapped operation via QR codes. Your private keys never have to touch a networked device. Every USB cable, every Bluetooth connection is an attack surface you don't need.

My Take

The Jade is my budget recommendation. You get Blockstream's security architecture, open-source firmware, and air-gapped capability for $79. The tradeoff is no built-in camera and a smaller screen. For most people, that's fine. The Jade proves you don't need to spend $200+ for real Bitcoin security. If you're just starting with hardware wallets or want a backup device, this is it.

What Blockstream Jade Does Better

Bitcoin-only focus (reduced attack surface)
Fully open-source and auditable
Air-gapped operation for maximum security
Same virtual secure element as Jade Plus at a fraction of the price

Best for: Budget-conscious Bitcoiners, Those who want Jade Plus security at lower price, Users who don't mind phone-based QR workflow, First-time hardware wallet buyers.

What Holds Ledger Nano S Plus Back

  1. Multi-coin support introduces unnecessary risk
  2. Requires direct connection (potential attack vector)
  3. Closed-source secure element
  4. Multi-coin bloat
  5. Same trust issues as Nano X

The core issue: Ledger Nano S Plus supports altcoins. For serious Bitcoin storage, that's a liability, not a feature.

On Altcoin Support

Every altcoin Ledger Nano S Plus supports is code that could compromise your bitcoin keys. Blockstream Jade doesn't carry that weight. Bitcoin-only firmware is leaner and more auditable.

What You Pay

Ledger Nano S Plus costs less at $59, but the $20 you'd save isn't worth the trade-offs. Blockstream Jade earns its price tag.

Market Context

The hardware wallet market has matured. Blockstream Jade and Ledger Nano S Plus represent two approaches to the same problem: keeping your bitcoin safe from everyone except you. The wallets that survive long-term will be the ones that take security seriously and respect the self-custody ethos.
